Old West Home Haunt Build Plans For 2022

Only 141 days until Halloween! And only 111 days until October 1st, which is when I like to have my Halloween decorations up!

I've been brainstorming for what to do this Halloween. Since we have been living in the camper I haven't had a chance to host a Halloween Party and Photo Shoot like we used to!

Now that we are on an acre, I'm thinking about creating an Old West themed home haunt with mostly outdoor decorations, complete with a Saloon and Jail. We live in a pretty rural area on the way to the Grand Canyon. I thought creating an outdoor haunted house powered by solar and going with the Old West theme would be a great way to honor the area, and this is something I would love people to come hang out and take pictures at, so it's going to be a complete set.

I thought it would be fun to document the creation process. Today, I started with the planning process. I know the main buildings I want to have are a jail and saloon. We actually don't have ANY buildings currently on our property. But we're looking at getting a shed so if that goes to plan then I'll use that as a base and create a facade for the front. If not, I'll be working with just facades. Here is a little inspo that I found today while browsing the internet.

I absolutely love the Old West pumpkin saloon girl. That would make a fantastic costume or character.

This week we are going to look at some buildings, so I should have a better idea of what type of facade I'm going to need to make. I anticipate it will take about 4-5 weeks to build the facade out and decorate it.

So I thought I would go ahead and start with some of the larger props like the coffin, the saloon doors, TNT chests, shutters, mine shaft props, characters, and such. I think the coffins will be good to start with because they will function not just as coffins, but also as benches for outside when we have guests, and storage for props, tools, and supplies since we don't really have any outdoor storage right now.

I found a few tutorial videos on YouTube for making prop coffins. This week I plan on going to Home Depot and pricing out what wood is going to be. This prop coffin from Spirit Halloween is kind of the vibe I would be going for!

After visiting the many ghost towns here in Arizona, I just am wanting to create something fun out here on our land that our local friends (and out of state friends too) can come and enjoy! I'll be posting plans, drawings, inspo, etc here as well as the typical podcast updates!

I can't wait to reveal the twist that I have planned as well. I think it will be a fun one!
